The municipality of Sinnai is one of the largest municipalities in Sardinia. The town of about 17,000 inhabitants still retains typical features and traditions of agro-pastoral culture.
Sinnai represents a tourist destination of considerable interest in many ways:
- artistic handicrafts. Sinnai is famous for its baskets – su strexu ‘e fenu – unique in their quality and the materials used, such as rush and hay. These are true artistic objects that still represent a centuries-old tradition present in several families and an economic resource for some of them;
- the town’s history can be read in the cobblestone historic center, where there are several traditional Campidanese houses, the parish church of Santa Barbara and the Civic Archaeological Museum, and in the surroundings rich in Nuragic, Punic and medieval remains;
- gastronomic culture, which allows, through agritourism and restaurants, to appreciate the authentic flavors of Sardinia;
- recreational and cultural activities. Throughout the vast municipal territory it is possible to visit exhibitions and attend various performances. In particular, Sinnai is home to the Civic Theater, inaugurated in 2004, which organizes the prose theater season, with a schedule of shows that seeks to meet the tastes of a diverse audience;
- sports activities. In the town of Sinnai and its hamlets, especially in Solanas and Torre delle Stelle, it is possible to practice sports and participate in maritime and mountain hiking activities throughout the year.
- Festivals and folk festivals. The numerous festivals and folk festivals represent authentic moments of town life, in which the best ethnomusical and folkloric expressions of Sinnai find their place. The most important festivals of a religious nature are those dedicated to Santa Barbara, the patron saint of the town, celebrated on the second or third Sunday of July, the feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian, celebrated on the third Sunday of September, and the feast of Sant’Elena, celebrated the last week of August.
- Culture. Cultural programs are developed throughout the year. Highlights include the traditional Sinnaese Carnival and exhibitions of local handicrafts, such as “The Basket Fair.”
