Conservatory of Music Auditorium

In 1971 the Conservatory moved from its former location in Piazza Palazzo, while the Auditorium was designed later.
Designer of both structures was Paolo Porceddu, an engineer and musician.
The design was later enlarged and modified by Porceddu himself, to give the hall not only a larger stage and higher audience capacity but also more technical rooms.
This led to a full-fledged Theater, able to accommodate about 1,200 seats between stalls and gallery.
The Auditorium was inaugurated in June 1977.
After the approval, in 1967, of the Corona law that established the 13 opera houses of the Italian state, the Istituzione dei Concerti became an autonomous body, under the leadership of a superintendent appointed by the city council and an artistic director, a position automatically held by the director of the Conservatorio (a unique case in Italy).
The Conservatory Auditorium thus became, until 1992, the official home of the concert, opera and ballet seasons of the city of Cagliari.
The Auditorium, after the opening in September 1993 of the New Municipal Theater, now the Cagliari Opera House, would remain closed thirteen long years for careful conservative restoration.
On December 18, 2005, the Auditorium was reopened.
