Lookout over the Mediterranean

The rampart called “Fort” or “Fortino” is part of the walls and has a defensive purpose for the entire village. It was built in 1488 and immediately had a purely military function. In 1816 the fort was reinforced by a good number of cannons and a garrison of French troops as well as becoming the site of a public telegraph service. In 1866, the walls ceased to be considered as a work of fortification, but the Fort remains the headquarters of the telegraphy and still a military area. In the first decade of the 20th century, the fort was used by the Royal Navy and elevated with a new Lookout Station, a function it would retain until the end of World War II.
