Naval Battery “Eater”

The building called “The Battery,” home of the commander and soldiers of the army during World War II, until 1997 was transformed into a typical Calasettana trattoria. In 2012 the building was an artistic place for international artists who performed temporary installations and murals, an Open Sky gallery, thus exposed to all atmospheric agents, protagonists of that earthly wear and tear that makes our life and works more real and closer to real life. A few meters away is located the watchtower “La Vendetta,” which during World War II had the function of controlling and protecting the arm of the sea of Sant’Antioco and Calasetta, with its four gun emplacements to cope with a possible enemy landing. Still today we can find ammunition depots, bases for the cannons and special “triangular stones,” necessary to calculate the exact aiming in order to hit the target.

Mangiabarche: The lighthouse was located in an area where rocks emerge from shallow water causing numerous shipwrecks in the past, hence the name mangiabarche.
