Sardinia Regional Council

The Regional Council is the legislative body of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia. In other words, it is the Parliament of the Sardinians. In addition to its more strictly legislative function, the Council exercises control and policy functions over the executive body of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, the Regional Council. The seat of the Legislative Assembly has been located at 25 Via Roma since 1988 and covers an area of 3200 square meters, divided into three bodies, of which, the central one houses the Council Chamber. The visual element that most characterizes the building is the material with which it is uniformly covered in the interior and exterior floors: granite. The large, mirrored slabs of granite seem to create a kind of “salt lake,” an effect strongly desired by Costantino Nivola to set his sculptures. The Sardinian artist is in fact the author of the monumental sculptures that surround the building, made between 1986 and 1987 in marble, travertine and granite, and representing figures linked to the ancestral values of nature, life, fertility, strength, and the anthropological memory of the Sardinian land. These figures are an expression of an extraordinary capacity for linguistic synthesis that brings together different inspirations: cubist, surrealist and primitivist. Nivola also graffitied, based on a drawing by Dorgali artist Salvatore Fancello, the huge granite panels placed on some of the exterior facades of the Palace. Work on the construction of an underground garage in the area behind the palace led, in 1994, to the discovery of artifacts dug into the rock: wells, cisterns, basins and cavities containing funerary offerings from the Roman period, remnants of the southern edge of the necropolis that, in imperial times, occupied the area of the upper part of Viale Regina Margherita.
