Located in the center of the Gulf of Asinara and lying on a white limestone promontory, the city is connected with Genoa, Civitavecchia, France and Spain. It is a very short distance from the most popular tourist destinations in northern Sardinia and offers visitors pleasant walks along the seafront promenade and strolls among the imposing vestiges of the past and among lively markets and craft stores.<br \/>\nAlso part of the territory is the island of Asinara, since 1997 a National Park of extraordinary naturalistic and historical value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The oldest human settlement of Porto Torres dates back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by the presence of villages, sanctuaries, and numerous <\/span><i><br \/>\n  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Domus de janas<\/span><br \/>\n<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the rock-cut burial caves.
