The promontory of Sant’Elia, like the hills on which Cagliari stands, consists of limestone and marl and preserves a valuable natural habitat. The area was inhabited in prehistoric times (6th mill. B.C.), then in Punic and Roman times for cultural purposes (temple of Astarte), in medieval times it was a hermitage of Vittorini monks, and the small church named after the martyr St. Elias was venerated until modern times. <\/p>\n\n
