Built between the late 14th and early 15th centuries, probably on an Angevin initiative, it had a defensive function for Porta Baresana. The cylindrical structure with a pentagonal base features military elements such as machicolations, loopholes and &#8220;elephant&#8217;s foot&#8221; casemates, inspired by the designs of Francesco di Giorgio Martini.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Over time it has played the roles of garrison, prison and civic space.
