“Sewing and Stitching on the Right and the Wrong” is Maria Lai’s installation, dated 2010, in the spaces of the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Economic, Legal and Political Sciences at the University of Cagliari. It belongs to the period of the late maturity of the artist, who passed away in 2013, and appears as an accomplished synthesis of the aspects that most characterize her entire work. Materials and techniques traditionally ascribed to a domestic dimension, such as sewing and weaving, become in Lai’s reworking the tool for constructing unprecedented narratives and for attributing new meanings to a heritage of knowledge deeply rooted in his home culture, projecting it into a totally contemporary dimension.<\/p>\n\n
Artist Guido Strazza comments on the work as follows: “This work is indifferent to time. Destroyed it will be able to be remade as it is now. This will not make it indifferent to the decay of use, but it will make ‘use, its lived and touched life the reason for being there, eternally new, in its perennial identical truth. Do not be afraid to touch it, to mark it, to ruin it. It cannot be ruined because it will be immediately reborn. This work is pure sign, pure form, pure concept, which few words can make eternal. There is no destruction where there is eternal reconstruction.
