The palace was built on the southern edge of the city. Its role was that of a &#8220;delizia,&#8221; that is, a private place dedicated to the rest, leisure and entertainment of the House of Este and the court, a space in which to &#8220;dodge, or disgust, boredom.&#8221; Starting in 1466 it was transformed into one of the most important buildings in Ferrara.
