It was built in 1488 and immediately had a purely military function. In 1816 the fort was reinforced by a good number of cannons and a garrison of French troops as well as becoming the site of a public telegraph service. In 1866, the walls ceased to be considered as a work of fortification, but the Fort remains the headquarters of the telegraphy and still a military area.
