Column of St. Anthony of Padua

Created in 1954 by Eugenio Tavolara, one of the most representative artists of island art, the column tells the story of the city through reliefs depicting the most significant moments in its history: Sassari’s free Commune, the plague epidemic of 1580, the entry of Giovanni Maria Angioy into Sassari, and the exploits of the Sassari Brigade. Called a “fountain” by the author, the 14-meter-high column is topped by a statue of St. Anthony of Padua.
