Commemorative bust of Giovanni Leccis MOVM

The memorial stone commemorates Capt. Maj. Giovanni Leccis MOVM of the XXXI Guastatori Engineers, who fell on the Tobruk Front on June 20, 1942. Once past Ain El Gazala, his unit is sent to the Tobruk front. When the encirclement of the stronghold is completed on June 20, the assault is ordered. The 2nd Guastator Company must force the minefields and the three entrenched lines. Leccis, as a pipe-carrying foreman, is part of the Destruction Unit. Wounded several times after locating and disarming several mines barring access to the grids, he will continue to advance, carrying and replacing exhausted tubes, until he manages to open a gap and an anti-tank shell marks the end. He is awarded the Gold Medal of Military Valor in memoriam.
