Church of Our Lady of Itria

The Church of Our Lady of Itria, Nuestra Senora de Orito, for the Spanish, represents the name given to the convent of Our Lady of Itria, from which the Gorito neighborhood in Dorgali is still named.

Built, probably, in the 15th century and renovated in the 17th century, it has recently undergone some major new restoration work. The church consists of a single nave. It houses the simulacra of St. Antiochus, St. Anne, Santu Gristos and St. Stephen.

The church originally began as a church of a monastery of friars who arrived in the 14th century to introduce Christianization. The cells of the friars of the convent, which was dismembered in the 1800s, were located in the section above the chancel of the same church, which is accessed by a flight of steps. Today, after restoration, the only two cells saved from destruction have been reopened.
