San Gavino Monreale

San Gavino Monreale has about 8,500 inhabitants and is located in the center of Campidano. The flat location of the area has facilitated the cultivation of rice and saffron, as well as grains and vines. The country boasts the title of “saffron capital” and produces as much as 60 percent of the total amount of Italian saffron, with PDO-labeled crops. The railway line directly connected San Gavino Monreale with Cagliari and included it in the large mining industry involving the Montevecchio mining basin. By virtue of this, the San Gavino Foundry arose in 1932, which initiated the substantial modernization of the town and for more than seventy years was one of the island’s leading industrial concerns. It was for some time the largest in Europe, universally famous for the production of hunting pellets, used in the Olympics since 1956 by virtue of fine workmanship. Today it is also known as the town of murals and is known for its Historic Carnival.
