Villaputzu

Villaputzu lies at the foot of the Sarrabus hills, nestled on the banks of the Flumendosa River on the east coast of Sardinia.
The surrounding area contains important evidence of ancient local civilizations (nuraghi, domus de janas, megalithic tombs, and the well temple of Is Pirois) and of the Medieval Age (Quirra Castle, coastal towers, and the remarkable church of San Nicola di Quirra)
There is also no shortage of evidence of mining activity such as the village of Baccu Locci, nestled in the green of a dense forest.
The territory of Villaputzu offers the possibility of interesting excursions in a splendid natural landscape characterized by the presence of natural hypogeic cavities, imposing waterfalls and important naturalistic sites.
Villaputzu is known as the “town of the Masters of Launeddas,” boasting in fact an important and ancient tradition of players, which has given it, since the second half of the 1800s, luster and fame throughout the island, and has in many cases crossed its borders.

The origins of Villaputzu, formerly called “Villa Pupus” or “Villa Pupia,” are identified with the Phoenician-Punic settlement of Sarcapos, already mentioned in antiquity by Ptolemy and located a few kilometers from the mouth of the Flumendosa River.
The urban center and adjoining area are to be considered of considerable interest in terms of culture, archaeology, history, wildlife and landscape. Inside the village you can see the parish of St. George Martyr (formerly named after St. Catherine) with its oratory and granary mount, and the church of St. Brigid, as well as the ruins of the old church of St. George Martyr.

Then, a few kilometers from the town are the beaches: the better-known Porto Corallo beach, in whose vicinity is the well-equipped marina of the same name; the Foce del Flumendosa beach; and the enchanting and wild Murtas beach.
