Antiaircraft Shelter

The shelter at Via Nuoro represents one of the rare examples of military archaeology on the island. The structure still retains its lighting, ventilation and running water systems. From February 1943 with the intensification of Allied air raids, it became necessary to equip the city of Carbonia with anti-aircraft shelters as well.

The existence in Carbonia of the Società Mineraria Carbonifera Sarda, largely equipped with materials, skilled workers, machinery, etc., made it possible to meet and exceed the needs imposed by the work for the shelters with a speed of execution and breadth of means unprecedented in Sardinia.
