The Bosa Harbor Tower, also known as the Red Island Tower, was probably built in the mid-16th century, and is first mentioned in 1572. Considered one of the largest in Sardinia, it was used for heavy defense and was manned by an Alcaide, a gunner and six soldiers. In addition to defense against the barbarians, it served as a prison, customs, sanitary, and harbor guard.
