The square was created after the demolition of the Castle in 1887. Since then the square took its present shape, was leveled and tree-lined to become together with the newly created Piazza d’Italia the “good living room of the city.” At the end of the 19th century the La Marmora Barracks, which occupies one entire side of the present square, was built.
