Domus de janas are artificial caves with one or more chambers dug into the rock, used for the deposition of the deceased, who were in this way reintroduced to the bosom of mother earth and for this reason were accompanied on their journey by the characteristic statuettes representing the mother goddess. The necropolis of Uniai, located near the Shrine of Our Lady of Itria, consists of several tombs, all of which are single-cell tombs with small funeral chambers. The major peculiarity of these tombs is that they are excavated in huge erratic boulders that rest on the ground and are also considerably spaced apart, rather than, as is more often the case, in a single, expansive rocky bank. The entrance doors are small in size and all carved very carefully.
