The mining site is located along the southwestern coast of Sardinia, near the town of Masua (Iglesias). Porto Flavia, named after the eldest daughter of its designer, was built in 1924 by excavating the mountain for about 600 meters; at the base of two overlapping tunnels a conveyor belt received the minerals from the underground deposits to transfer them, with its ingenious moving arm, directly into the hold of the cargo ships at anchor. This ingenious solution, which at that time was capable of revolutionizing the system of mineral embarkation, until that date practiced by loading by means of coffins carried on the shoulders of Carloforte’s “galanze” on their 20-30 ton sailboats, is now illustrated to visitors so that along with the charm of a marvelous place they can also admire an example of ingenuity and accomplished technique.
