In the year 1881, the population of Sanluri was in a very serious administrative situation because, despite the great drought and the failure of the harvest, the tax burden was almost doubled. On the morning of Sunday, August 7, 1881, a large number of commoners, after gathering in the S. Martino district, headed to the Piazza de su Pottabeddu, with the purpose of inciting the entire population to demand the suspension of the payment of the surtax. The group increased considerably when they were joined by almost all the peasants from the nearby parish coming out of mass. Mayor Antioco Murru was led to the square of Monte Frumentario so that he could urge Monte Granatico officials to disburse the subsidies to those most in need. The mayor’s attitudes exasperated the spirits of the rioters, who clubbed and slaughtered him. Thus ended that bloody day, which had landed several young Sanlurians in jail just because the people had dared to cry out, WE ARE HUNGRY.
