The domestic chapel of the Sisters of the “Congregation of the Daughters of St. Joseph of Genoni” is located in the basement of the former Tridentine Seminary building on University Street.
The building was built by the Piedmontese military architect Count Saverio Belgrano of Famolasco and in 1776 was used as the Tridentine Seminary by Bishop Monsignor Giuseppe Agostino Delbecchi and as such remained in operation until 1959. The “Congregation of the Daughters of St. Joseph of Genoni” saw the light of day in this very building in 1888 at the behest of Fr. Felice Prinetti, then rector of the Seminary, who united the nucleus of Sisters who were serving in the Tridentine Seminary into the Congregation of the Daughters of St. Joseph and appointed Mother Eugenia Montixi as the first Superior General.
The religious congregation carried out its church service from 1888 to 1956, and the Home Chapel represented the heart of the floor inhabited by the Sisters. On October 4, 1955, the Bishop of Cagliari, Bishop Paolo Botto, ceded the premises of the Tridentine Seminary to the University of Cagliari, represented by then Rector Prof. Antonino D’Angelo.
As a result, in the first half of 1956, the Sisters had to leave this ancient location.
Currently, the Home Chapel is located inside the University’s Networks and Information Services Department; it was restored between 2002 and 2004 precisely to preserve the historical memory of such a distinguished place and to pay homage to the religious congregation that saw the light and began its church service in this very building.
