Museum of the Railways of Sardinia

Open to the public for the past few years, the Museum of the Sardinian Railways is located in Monserrato at the offices and facilities of the Cagliari Operations Directorate and can be reached from the capital in about 15 minutes by weekday trains from the FdS station in Piazza Repubblica.

Spread over about 1,000 square meters, it constitutes a first functional lot of a more complex work, financed and implemented under the Integrated Mediterranean Program, through the Sardinian Tourist Industries Board.

The intervention is in the vein of others related to the “Trenino Verde,” the tourist service of the Sardinian Railways, and in the design of the work, the leading theme was the re-proposition of forms and characteristics of the spaces, environments, and moments in the history of the railway in Sardinia. The locomotives, carriages, objects and tools of the stations and workshops are inserted into the contemporary nature of today’s architecture, but not in a vision of a container museum, but of a museum laboratory of history and memory.

Visited every weekday morning, it is distributed according to an easy guided tour through the main working environments of the railways. Also located in the Museum is the Tourist Office: here you can request and arrange trips on the Green Train, along all the lines of the Sardinian Railways.
