Santa Giusta

The town of Santa Giusta is three kilometers from Oristano, and is symbolized by the Basilica of the same name, one of the greatest examples of Romanesque architecture in Sardinia.
It is the municipality in the province with the highest growth rate and destined for further increase.

Santa Giusta boasts ancient origins; indeed, it is quite likely that the Phoenician city of Othoca once stood in the present urban center, as the discovery of Punic and Roman tombs has led one to think. In addition, the survival of a craft known as fassoni, made from marsh grasses, testifies to the existence of a civilization predating the Nuragic one.

A few meters from the houses is the Santa Giusta pond, one of the largest on the island. On its eastern shore, in the most important industrial area in the province of Oristano, is the port. Fishing in the pond, particularly for mullet, eel and crab, is a mainstay of the town’s economy. The fish farms, called pischeras, are very similar to fish farms, although fishing through catching is practiced in them.
The Santa Giusta pond provides the setting each year in August for the traditional regatta de is fassonis.

Another fundamental economic resource, with a view to optimal tourist enjoyment of the area, is the entire system of wetlands and the mountainous area of the Arci, which are part of the Mount Arci Regional Nature Park.
