Savona

Main center of the Riviera del Ponente Ligure and the third largest city in terms of population. First traces of the city date back to the Bronze Age, although its development occurred from Carolingian rule, when it became the seat of the Marca of Savona. Established as an episcopal see in 999 and as a free municipality in 1191.

In the old Darsena, the oldest part of the Port, you can admire some of the city’s historic sites: the Brandale Tower (1300), the Leon Pancaldo Tower (1392). Also near the harbor is the Priamar Fortress (1542-44), a military building built by the Republic of Genoa that houses the City and Archaeological Museum and the Sandro Pertini and Renata Cuneo Museum.

Also known as the “City of Popes,” home of Popes Sixtus IV and Julius II Della Rovere. Savona can also boast of its “Sistine Chapel.”

Savona is also forward-looking, with an eye toward digital evolution. In this regard, mention may be made of the “All About Apple Museum,” established in 2002, currently the best-stocked Apple museum in the world.
