Little is known about the small church of San Gennaro in ancient Cerreto, so much so that it was already completely destroyed by the end of the 16th century since, as of the bishop’s visit in 1599, there is no further mention of it. The present church of San Gennaro was desired in the new urban fabric of Cerreto Sannita by the husband and wife Giuseppe Giamei and Elisabetta Biondi who, in 1722, manifested before the Cerreto notary Lorenzo Mazzarelli their desire to build a temple to be dedicated to Saints Gennaro and Liborio. In 1927, the church was declared a national monument thanks to the advocacy efforts of a civic committee that called for the building’s restoration. Since 1998 it has housed the sacred art section of the cerretese ceramics and civic museum.
