Gavoi went from being a small village of shepherds and horse breeders to a village with a high vocation for tourism and culture, which has been able to make a name for itself outside the island. It is quite distinctive, with its exposed granite houses arranged amphitheatrically on a slope sloping toward a wooded basin, at an altitude of nearly 800 meters.
Gavoi, is a village rich in history: this is proven by ancient medieval documents, from which it emerges that in 1388 it participated, with other centers in Barbagia, in the signing of the peace treaty between Eleanor of Arborea and John I of Aragon. The town of Gavoi has several historic buildings to see. Of particular note are the parish church of San Gavino, the small church of Sant’Antioco, the Church of Carmel, the Casa Porcu Satta museum, set up in a beautiful manor house that houses a fine ethnographic collection, and the Sardinian Flower Museum. Increasing environmental tourism importance is being given to Lake Gusana, a picturesque man-made lake with an alpine appearance, fed by the Taloro River and surrounded by dense ilex groves that characterize its appearance.
Gavoi has been awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club, a tourist-environmental quality mark intended for municipalities that have been able to enhance quality tourism, cultural heritage, environmental protection and the culture of hospitality.
