Marconi Street and Cagliari Street

The Feb. 17, 1943, air attack occurred around 2:45 p.m., when twelve American planes from the Allied front bombed the town of Gonnese. Hundreds of pieces fell along Porru Bonelli Street, the main road, and on its parallel, Marconi Street. Cagliari Street, in the vicinity of the riverbank, was also severely affected.

In that area, some women and children were intent on the daily ritual of washing clothes. Witnesses tell of blood-splattered streets, torn and unrecognizable bodies, terror and loss of all hope. What speaks of that day, beyond the stories and the monument in February 17 Square, dedicated to the fallen, are the walls and gates that still, particularly in Marconi Street, bear the traces of the breakings.
