Old Slaughterhouse – Library and Historical Archives

The Old Slaughterhouse of Quartu, located on the outskirts along the municipal road to Quartucciu, was built as a slaughterhouse in 1901 and remained in operation until 1968. Today it houses not only the Central Library but also the Historical Archives and the Children’s Library, and is a significant venue artistically and functionally.

In conjunction with the Open Monuments 2025 event, the Central Library will be opened following redevelopment work.

The work was carried out in line with the principles of Universal Design and accessibility, which place the person in his or her diversity at the center with the goal of creating spaces and services that are truly accessible, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of the entire community. This translates to interventions that go beyond the simple elimination of architectural barriers to include aspects such as:

  • Physical accessibility: Wide, obstacle-free interior pathways, ergonomic and height-adjustable furniture, and consultation stations accessible to people in wheelchairs or of limited height.
  • Sensory accessibility: Adequate lighting systems, clear signage with high color contrasts, information available in alternative formats such as braille, audiobooks, and highly readable text. Also, the provision of digital content accessible to people with visual or hearing disabilities.
  • Cognitive accessibility: Use of clear and simple language in signage and information materials, intuitive organization of spaces and resources, availability of multimedia and interactive media to facilitate understanding.
  • Digital accessibility: Websites and online catalogs designed according to web accessibility principles (WCAG), ensuring usability by people with various disabilities. Offer apps and platforms that are intuitive and easy to navigate.
  • Creation of inclusive spaces: Dedicated areas for different age groups and with specific needs, such as children’s spaces, quiet study areas, and group activity areas, designed to encourage interaction and inclusion.

The original design of the Old Slaughterhouse, by engineer A.F. Loi, underwent some modifications due to a cloudburst in 1889, but retained a simple elegance and functionality meeting the hygienic standards of the time.

The structure is symmetrical to a central axis and features a facade with a wrought-iron entrance gate, office windows, and a slaughter room with closed doors to keep the meat fresh. Surrounding the building were courtyards and sheds for livestock and a pelandra for tanning hides.
