St. John’s Tower – Jazz Club

(Mura est – Herculean Addition) In 1493, architect Biagio Rossetti began construction of the Walls to defend the Addizione Erculea. The fortifications in this part of the city are majestic and have several towers, including that of St. John the Baptist. Being military architecture, originally the roof was a terrace surrounded by a high crenellated wall on which artillery was placed, but already a few years later the building was covered by an umbrella roof. The importance of the Keep as a military stronghold declined rapidly, and for a long time the building was used for improper purposes. With the restoration provided by the “Project Walls” in the 1990s, the Keep became a lively cultural container and since 1999 has been home to the “Jazz Club,” which, over the years, has given rise to rich and prestigious events with illustrious names in Italian and international jazz, until it became one of the most awarded clubs in Europe.
