The church’s origins predate the 18th century, and it appears to have been rebuilt at the expense of the nobleman Don Gaetano Cardia in 1758 as stated in a 1761 inventory by parish vicar Antonio Armas.
The vicar reports that “In 1758 the church dedicated to St. Margaret virgin and martyr was rebuilt in the locality called “the castle of ‘Acquafredda.”
It consists of a nave, its roof is made of boards and tiles, it is 21 palms wide, 23 high, 551 long; it has a door in the front, its ordinary bell tower without bell, nor scale; it has no dowry but it was rebuilt at the expense of the noble don Gaetano Cardia, who is interested in the feast which is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of September.”
After restoration in 1947 the building is in Gothic-Catalan forms with a crenellated facade reminiscent of the church of St. Anne.
Every year, in the fourth week of September, the popular festival of Santa Margherita takes place there, with a procession starting on Saturday from the town of Siliqua to the church located at the foot of the castle.
