Our Lady of Cabu Abbas

The church of Cabu Abbas from Sardinian, Italian for “at the head of the waters,” is one of the churches in the area that dates back to the historical period between the 12th and 13th centuries; it was built in the Romanesque-Pisan style. In the past it was also the residence of monks from Montecassino. Entirely of white limestone interspersed with black trachyte, the church has a southeast-facing apse and apsidal space along the northern flank, a single cross-vaulted nave supported by pointed arches, and an architraved portal with a discharge arch. The highlight of the exterior facade is an anthropomorphic sculpture, the shape of which is not easily interpreted, but is supposed to represent a pre-Christian deity. The church underwent restoration in 1971. Religious celebrations are held annually on September 8, on the occasion of the feast day in honor of the Infant Mary.
