Civic Tower

The Civic Tower originated as the Torre Littoria, home of the Casa del Fascio. The laying of the foundation stone took place on June 10, 1937. Clad in red trachyte, it is m. high. 27.50 and divided into 5 floors: on the ground floor was the Shrine dedicated to the Fascist martyrs, here one can admire Crocetti’s marble high relief, with its allegorical figurations relating to all aspects of the Nation’s life in the Fascist climate: Winged Victory, a symbol of power, Labor, Family, Militia and Regime Organizations. When fascism fell in 1943, the sculpture was covered by a partition and only in the 1980s was it accidentally rediscovered. On the second floor was located the Directory, which gave onto the balcony from which Mussolini looked out to inaugurate Carbonia on December 18, 1938. The other upper floors were occupied by the offices of the Fascio. The tower now houses municipal offices.
