The Sassari Brigade Historical Museum preserves the memory and traditions of this glorious Army unit, a unique example of compactness, self-sacrifice and military valor demonstrated during the Great War. The Brigade is now a leading unit of the Italian Army, frequently engaged in operations at home and abroad. Established in 1915 for use in World War I combat, it is characterized by predominantly regional recruitment and a very strong esprit de corps. The Brigade particularly distinguished itself during the aforementioned conflict, receiving – unique among Royal Army units – two gold medals and a Military Order of Savoy for each of the two Regiments (151st and 152nd).
The personnel of the Sassari Brigade, today as yesterday, continue to work in the service of the nation with the same values that animated the Sassarini a hundred years ago. Notable interventions include those in support of international peace and security in the Former Yugoslavia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Somalia.
The museum tour includes displays of period papers, documents, memorabilia, weapons, artifacts, uniforms and photographs. Particularly striking is the reconstruction of a trench from the Great War. The museum is located inside the La Marmora barracks, the headquarters of the Brigade Headquarters, which was created following the demolition of the previous Aragonese castle in 1880 and named after Alberto Ferrero del- la Marmora. The building, which has a quadrangular plan, occupies an entire block where, within it are two large courtyards, one of which is arcaded. On display in the main courtyard are the five coats of arms once placed on the castle’s facade.
