The church of Santa Severa, dating from the Byzantine period, stands in the area of an ancient necropolis linked to a village inhabited by free men of the Roman era. Its location made it particularly important for controlling the mountain passes of Perd’e Pibera. About the settlement there is not much information, while about the church we know that by 1763 it was in ruins and included in the list of churches to be demolished, but following the petitions of the population, in 1797, restoration was started, which followed the artistic lines of the period and, after that of 1873, it has two cross chapels, hemispherical dome of scaled embrici, a slight enlargement of the nave from the ancient Greek cross setting and a portico that extends from the facade along the sides. The Gonnese, with great participation, celebrate the Saint on Easter Monday. Of ancient origin is the traditional “sparai su cabòni.” which was a boast for the winners and the countries of origin.
