Former Quarries

The very name of the Municipality of Monteleone Rocca Doria summarizes the environmental and historical-cultural values, represented by the vestiges of the past, still present in the local material and intangible culture. Walking through the streets of the Borgo one can admire, among many other things, the ruins of the medieval Castle-Fortress of the Dorias dating back to the 13th century, the two 14th-century churches within the matrix center and a museum on traditional bread-making, as well as the lake located at the foot of the Rocca, the via ferrata on the rock face, an adventure park and an open-air theater “Cava Su Giardinu,” built within disused quarries, with a panoramic view of the lake.

There are two old stone quarries now disused and redeveloped: the “Su Giardinu” Quarry intended for cultural activities and the “Sant’Antonio” Quarry, named “Adventure Park,” as it is intended for sports activities, following in the footsteps of Indiana Jones. The “Su Giardinu” quarry is designated as a performance area, with an open-air theater identified within the quarry, in a space adjacent to that of the adventure park, in view of the excellent acoustics and charm of the location, overlooking and overlooking Lake Temo. The Adventure Park is meant to attract enthusiasts, especially from the European market, who want to try their hand at free climbing, angel flight or hang gliding, but it is also meant to have the purpose of making people curious about the history of the area and Sardinia.

Within the quarry there are nature trails located on the rocky ridge, with panoramic views of Lake Temo and Mount Minerva, including the via ferrata of the Queen of Arborea, a historical figure who certainly stayed with her groom, lord of the medieval village, in Monteleone Rocca Doria.
