The Castle

The area called “of the palace” lies on the southeastern slope of the hill of Monteleone Rocca Doria. The first documents pertaining specifically to the fortified site of Monteleone, with exact mention of its toponym, are dated only from the second half of the 13th century, where it appears associated with the term castellum although no mention is made of the monumental structure, nor of its internal topographical organization, nor of its possible relationship to the village supporting the military structure.

The “palace,” which emerged after the archaeological excavation, was part of the core of the castle proper, formed by walls, an access gate leading to the palace area and, from there, to a kind of parade ground located immediately south of it.

The obligatory passage took place on a cobblestone road, which ran between two very high and strong walls, parallel and very narrow, which at the time were controlled and defended by soldiers in arms.
