It constitutes a heritage of great cultural value for the town of Quartu Sant’Elena, which, at the time of the founding of Montegranatico in 1723, was a village of less than 2,500 inhabitants called in a Spanish way “Quarte.”
The Montegranatico was a kind of bank where grain was loaned to needy farmers, who agreed to pay it back after harvest with a surcharge of about 5 percent. In the period following the Unification of Italy, Monte Granatico gradually fell into disuse; there were new laws on the subject, from which a process of transformation into Monte di Soccorso began.
Since the 2015/16 school year, it has been home to the L. Rachel Civic School of Music.
