Mutual Aid Society

Mutual aid societies, present in Europe as early as the Roman period, were born and developed as organizations aimed at dealing with any hardships (illness, war, disability, poverty) of the working classes. Established on April 4, 1908 by deed of notary Efisio Serra, the Society of Mutual Assistance between Workers and Artisans of Serramanna is a shining example of Serramanna’s extraordinary associational and solidaristic heritage. Over the years, it has performed its valuable task of providing mutual assistance to members and their families in a timely manner. Recently the historic headquarters was renovated, including the placement of a commemorative plaque commemorating the 40 founding members. The association’s historical archive, which testifies to its history and activities within the Serramannese community, has undergone scientific reorganization and digitization and is now freely available for consultation.
