Sa Fogaia Archaeological Nature Park (nature tour)

Sa Fogaia Park is a naturalistic and archaeological area located on the eastern slope of the Giara di Siddi, at an elevation of about 320 m. Frequented by humans since prehistoric times (witness a corridor nuraghe, an obsidian-processing station and other settlements from various periods), it shows spaces in which forest prevails, others in which herbaceous stands predominate, and still others represented by Mediterranean scrub. Walking its paths, it is possible to observe the many varieties of animals that live there and a good part of the floristic species, including endemic and rare ones, that make up the plant community of Marmilla and southern Sardinia. Again, one can find old shepherds’ enclosures, or discover “signs” that tell of ancient agricultural work or for woodland activities (terracing, piles of stones and more). Or it is possible to reach the point where an imposing ridge of basaltic rock has been standing for about 2.5 million years, from the observation of which it is possible to better understand the geological origins of the Giara of Siddi and that of the other Giare (e.g., that of Gesturi), as well as the hilly environment characteristic of Marmilla. In the park, which is also home to the CEAS Siddi – Marmilla, there are also spaces for holding recreational and cultural events, orienteering trails, and a well-equipped picnic area.
