Trekking to Sa Macchina Beccia

Hike led by the association’s trekking instructors to the mining site of “Sa Macchina Beccia,” along a loop dirt path on the plateau of the S. Giorgio mine, passing by the mining lakes of “Monti Oi” to arrive at “Villaggio Asproni,” and then returning to the starting point.

Sa Macchina Beccia was built in 1870: it is a mining shaft known as the Santa Barbara shaft. From the tower-like smokestack rose the steam produced by the large engines for lifting the ore mined underground. This historic building was designed by engineer Adolfo Pellegrini, until 1875 general manager of the mines of the Monteponi Company.
