Siviller Castle

The Siviller Castle, also known as the “strong house” because of its peculiar function as a fortified private residence, was built in 1415 by John Siviller, who was invested by King Alfonso of Aragon with the fiefdom on which the village of Sorres lay. At first, it functioned as a defensive bulwark against possible rebel incursions. With the cessation of conflicts, it was transformed into a stately residence. Ownership of the castle was boasted by the Alagons for centuries, with whom it became a Marquisate (1594 – 1703). After the abolition of the feudal system, it was the seat of public utilities as well as the mandamentary prison. From the second half of the 1800s said function ceased and the castle was given to private individuals. Since 1910 it has been listed by the Superintendence as a Monument of National Interest. The Siviller Castle, a symbol of rebirth, is located barycentrically to the center of the town and stands on an area covering about three thousand square meters, almost half of which is built up. Due to its architectural features, the structure can be traced back to the masia typology, a kind of fortified baronial farm of Spanish matrix. The complex consists of a main fortress around which there are other buildings serving it. The plan has a U-shaped configuration, consisting of three arms that define the area of an inner courtyard. This configuration is on three levels: ground floor, second floor and attic. Note the numerous details in Gothic-Catalan style that embellish its structure. Heritage of the municipality since 1991, it underwent an organic restoration, completed in 2004. Among the appurtenant buildings, the one located along Baronale Street is now used as a Council Chamber.
