Bishop’s Palace and Contemporary Art Collection “Palace of the Muses

Once the home of Marquis Brondo, lords of Villacidro from 1594 to 1694, the palace has had numerous destinations and remodeling. The salubriousness of the village, inspired Monsignor G. M. Pilo, bishop of the Diocese of Ales, who bought it in 1767 to make it a summer residence and escape the malaria that raged in the flatlands.

Between 1807 and 1814, when Villacidro was the provincial capital, the structure was designated as a prefecture and was equipped with a prison used no until the middle of the last century. In 1932 it became, in ne, an episcopal seminary.

Its grandeur, some architectural details, the fountain in the inner courtyard, the frescoes in some of the rooms and the hallway, and the extensive gardens full of trees and its centrality still make it an important landmark. On the ground floor of the Palace you can visit the Modern Art Collection “Palace of the Muses.”
