Spa complex

The spa complex, dating back to the 4th century AD , is located outside the town at San Lorenzo. The facility was partially reused as a foundation for the building of the medieval church of San Lorenzo itself. The building is predominantly made of bricks; it consists of a rectangular hall (within which the hall of the small church was obtained), perhaps corresponding to the tepidarium, bordered by a series of rooms with curved ends (opposing apses), to be referred to the calidaria. The baths were fed by a nearby spring located a few meters away and by water artificially heated in the praefurnium located in the apsidal body where the furnace mouth is clearly visible. Not all rooms are recognizable in their original use; however, the simultaneous use of cold and hot bathing is evident; perhaps there was also the laconicum for exudation bathing, and there must have been no shortage of passage rooms. These rooms were not excavated to preserve the lines of the small church. The building seems datable to around the 4th century A.D. It was likely connected to a “villa rustica” whose remaining wall structures were destroyed in the course of some agricultural work.
