The Tower of the Ten Horses, also called the Torre della Puerta because it surmounts the ancient gate that barred passage to raiders, was erected to guard and defend the villages in the Muravera area in Spanish times. Already in operation in 1553, the Spanish Tower was manned by two tower men from the royal administration and 10 militia knights, after whom it was named, who with their horses promptly warned the population if Saracen boats were sighted.
