Santo Stefano Belbo

The territory of Santo Stefano Belbo measures a little more than 23 square kilometers and lies on the edge of the Langhe, in a largely hilly area consisting of limestone marls and sandstones, except for the alluvial plain formed by the Belbo stream. The settlement is situated at an elevation of 175 meters above sea level, while the slopes on either side of the river reach, especially on the northern side, high hill elevations culminating in the 590 meters of the Falchetto locality. Santo Stefano borders the municipalities of Calosso, Camo, Canelli, Castiglione Tinella, Cossano Belbo, Loazzolo and Mango.

Santo Stefano is a world that leads invariably to its historical past, which is lost in the early year 1000, as well as in more recent history, that recounted by Cesare Pavese, a distinguished writer of the twentieth century who was born in Santo Stefano Belbo on September 9, 1908. Everything in Santo Stefano is reminiscent of the great poet and his novels: from the streets of the center to the house where he was born, from the place names (the Salto, the Mora, the Nido, the Robini), to Nuto’s house.

Santo Stefano Belbo is not only about culture; in fact, the municipality of Pavese is the largest producer of Moscato d’Asti and Asti Spumante. The river of this liquid gold that is obtained reaches a very impressive flow rate. From the more than 1060 hectares planted with grapes for the production of D. O. C. G. and D. O. C. (45 percent of the entire territorial area of the municipality), just under 80 thousand hectoliters of wine are obtained, 93 percent of which is Moscato, in the two versions, Asti Spumante and Moscato d’Asti D. O. C. G. Among other wines, good consistency also has the production of Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba, Langhe Chardonnay, Langhe Freisa and Langhe Favorita. The Municipality of Santo Stefano Belbo, throughout the year, organizes an important series of events, among which are the events set up by the Cesare Pavese Foundation (among all the Pavese Festival) together with the various literary and sculpture exhibitions and awards organized by Cepam. In addition to the more strictly cultural events, the festivals organized by the Municipal Tourist Board and the Pro Loco stand out, including the celebrations of the various Santostefan villages and hamlets and the summer patronal festival followed by the winter Cubiot Fair.
