Famous for the Emerald Coast and cradle of 8 extraordinary archaeological sites, with 6,000 years of history behind it, the municipality of Arzachena celebrated in 2022 the 100th anniversary of its autonomy from the town of Tempio Pausania. On May 14, 1922, the first town council took office. The agglomeration of houses and stazzi, which in 1880 had just 80 inhabitants, has since grown at an exponential rate until, in the 1960s, it became a destination for international tourism thanks to the birth of the Costa Smeralda by Ishmaelite Prince Karim Aga Khan. For more than 60 years, the village of Porto Cervo first, those of Baja Sardinia and Poltu Quatu later, have been the symbol and driving force behind the economy of Sardinian tourism alongside the residential settlements of Cannigione, Abbiadori, and Liscia di Vacca.
The part of the territory geographically demarcated as Costa Smeralda by the Consortium of the same name that owns the trademark is the attraction that has made the municipality famous along with the rich natural, historical and archaeological heritage that encompasses the town. The necropolis of Li Muri and the natural monumental rock of Fungo – in which the oldest evidence of local culture dating back to the Neolithic period came to light – along with the nuragic village of La Prisgiona, the tombs of the giants of Coddu Ecchju, Li Lolghi, Moru, the small temple of Malchittu and to the Albucciu nuraghe , attract visitors from all over the planet.
