Calangianus

Calangianus, located in the province of Sassari in Sardinia, is a municipality of about 3,779 inhabitants, known as the “cork capital.” Its fame derives from the centuries-old tradition of working with this valuable material, which is used to produce high-quality handicrafts such as wine bottle stoppers, knick-knacks, jewelry, and more.

The origins of Calangianus date back to medieval times, as evidenced by the remains of the castle of Monte Cucino. Over the centuries, the village has experienced intense activity related to agriculture and animal husbandry, but it was mainly the development of the cork industry from the 19th century onward that marked its fate.

Today, Calangianus is an important tourist center that offers visitors a wide variety of attractions. In addition to numerous cork craft workshops, where you can admire the different stages of processing and buy typical products, the town boasts a rich historical and cultural heritage.

Don’t miss a visit to the Cork Museum, which illustrates the history and processing techniques of this material, and the Church of St. James, dating back to the 16th century.
