Calangianus

Calangianus is a town of 3,773 inhabitants, set in a mountainous territory at the foot of Mount Limbara, surrounded by cork forests that have always characterized its landscape. It is precisely this characteristic that Calangianus makes its strong point with cork extraction and its factories. Cork processing, at an industrial level, can be traced back to the early 1800s with entrepreneurs of French origin, who, realizing the great opportunity of the place, settled in the village and began to establish the first cork extraction and manufacturing centers. Given the importance of this natural element, in 2012, the “Cork Museum” was opened to the public, located in the center of the village, inside the former convent of the Franciscan friars and the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. The structure, made entirely of granite, another characteristic of the village of Calangianus, was founded around the 18th century AD by Capuchins who abandoned it, due to State-Church conflicts, in 1866. Later, the structure was used as barracks of the Royal Carabinieri, school, prison and vector offices.
