Castiadas

Castiadas is a scattered Italian municipality of 1670 inhabitants.
Its territory has been inhabited by man since the pre-Nuragic and Nuragic periods.
In the Middle Ages it was part of the giudicato of Cagliari and finally to the Crown of Aragon.

The earliest traces of today’s settlement date back to the 14th century, when the village of Villanova Castiadas was founded, but abandoned in the 16th century due to plagues.
In the nineteenth century, after more than three centuries of neglect, the area was reclaimed for the purpose of erecting a penal agricultural colony, which was later closed in the 1950s and has been converted into a museum for the past few years.
After World War II, Castiadas, experienced a phase of expansion, which led to the birth of the Annunziata and Olia Speciosa hamlets, as well as the development of those of Sabadi, Ortedusu and San Pietro.
In 1986 Castiadas became an autonomous municipality, and the economy, for decades based on agriculture and pastoralism, also began to rely on tourism, thanks to the various settlements along the coast.
